Kale is a powerhouse of nutrients. If you haven’t heard tried it yet, get ready for a treat. Calorie for calorie, kale is the best leafy green you can use in your smoothies. Thumbs up on the nutritional value of kale.

Sadly, kale gets a thumbs down on taste. Kale has a bitter taste that can dominate a smoothie if not balanced with naturally sweet fruit, like kiwi or pineapple.

This green smoothie combines kale with kiwi for a sweet and healthy treat. I’ve added a bit of broccoli for extra greens as well as a more pleasing texture.

  • 2 cups fresh kale
  • 2 kiwis
  • 1 cup fresh broccoli florets
  • 1 frozen banana

Vitamix Blade Safety Recall

In late August, Vitamix declared a voluntary recall on particular containers with an edge which is believed to pose a possible “laceration risk.” No accidents are documented, but technicians at Vita-mix have decided the layout of the edge might be vulnerable to breaking and might subsequently result in harm. The blades in question have the number 103208A etched on the peak of the edge, and were made between March 2012 and July 2013.

If you have one of these blades, or are not sure if you have one of these blades, contact Vitamix.com for more information. Vitamix should help you process a return of the recalled blade. When the container is obtained by Vita-mix, they may at their cost fix the blade, including installing a fresh edge, and return your repaired container within a few days.

Vita-mix is asking for customers that have one of these affected blades to begin the recall process instantly. Vitamix is also offering a one year warranty extension for customers affected by the recall.

  1. Mix pomegranate puree, or juice, with remaining ingredients and blend until smooth.

Notes

If you use pomegranate seeds, spoon them out of the pomegranate and puree them using your blender.

  • 1 tablespoon natural sweetener (honey or agave nectar)
  • 1 cup ice

Instructions

  1. Remove carrot ends.
  2. Core the apple.
  3. Add ingredients to blender jar putting the ice on top.
  4. Blend until smooth.

Notes

For a little extra nutrition, leave the seeds and stem. Be sure to chop the apple into cubes so your blender blades can move.
