Vitamix Blade Safety Recall

container blade recall

In late August, Vitamix declared a voluntary recall on particular containers with an edge which is believed to pose a possible “laceration risk.” No accidents are documented, but technicians at Vita-mix have decided the layout of the edge might be vulnerable to breaking and might subsequently result in harm. The blades in question have the number 103208A etched on the peak of the edge, and were made between March 2012 and July 2013.

If you have one of these blades, or are not sure if you have one of these blades, contact for more information. Vitamix should help you process a return of the recalled blade. When the container is obtained by Vita-mix, they may at their cost fix the blade, including installing a fresh edge, and return your repaired container within a few days.

Vita-mix is asking for customers that have one of these affected blades to begin the recall process instantly. Vitamix is also offering a one year warranty extension for customers affected by the recall.

Vitamix vs Blendtec

Vitamix vs Blendtec—The Ultimate Showdown between the Best Blenders on the Market

Take a look at any Vitamix review or Blendtec review and it’s quite plain to see that in the battle of the blenders, there really is only one main event on the fight card: Vitamix vs Blendtec.  The two names are amongst the biggest in home kitchen appliances and if you’re looking for a blender, chances are these two brands are at the top of most buyer’s lists.  But while the Vitamix vs Blendtec debate has been raging in health circles and online chat rooms for years, there really hasn’t been one declared winner. That’s because the Vitamix vs Blendtec battle is continuously evolving, with each company constantly one-upping the other with new models and features.  In fact, it’s so hard to keep up with the Vitamix vs Blendtec discussion, we are constantly needing to update our Vitamix reviews and Blendtec reviews with new information.

A Point by Point Comparison

With that said, we’ve decided to take the latest information into account and concentrate on the task at hand.  Our Vitamix vs Blendtec challenge places the two best blenders head to head.  We’ve taken the best blender features into account alongside the most essential ones in an effort to crown an ultimate King of the Blenders, if that’s at all possible.  Here’s what we found.

blendtec motor

Blendtec motor

First, we looked at the horsepower from various models and what we found wasn’t surprising.  Both models offer enough horsepower for just about any blending job.  In fact, in a blind taste test, most people aren’t going to be able to tell which smoothie or juice came from which brand.  They are both excellent blenders. When it comes to horsepower, the edge here does go to Blendtec as they have the numbers over Vitamix.  Blendtec blenders are rated at 3-peak horsepower while most Vitamix blenders are rated at 2-peak horsepower.  Of course, a home blender doesn’t really need more than a 2-peak horsepower motor, but some people just like to have more power.  In the kitchen, the Vitamix is extremely powerful.  We feel it handles tough blending jobs, like ice, better than the higher powered Blendtec.

Next up, we looked at the blades of various Vitamix and Blendtec models. Vitamix goes the standard route, employing a four-tipped blade familiar to many blender brands and models. Blendtec, on the other hand, uses a two prong blade that is straight with wingtips.  While both get the job done, many consumers feel that the Vitamix blade does a more efficient job blending, something that is evidenced by its lower need for horsepower. On the other hand, the Blendtec blade isn’t as sharp, but rather relies on the powerful motor to get the job done.  Blendtec’s Wild Side jar is wider than the older Vitamix jar.  This allows for a longer blade and more space for ingredients to enter the blender’s vortex.  In other words, fruits and veggies fall into the blade easily because of the extra space. This may seem like an advantage over the Vitamix design, however each Vitamix blender ships with the patented Vitamix tamper.  The tamper is designed with a safety collar, which helps break up air pockets without risk of the tamper getting caught in the blades.  This tamper is great for thick mixtures and recipes with lots of ice or frozen ingredients.

Vitamix vs Blendtec blade

Blendtec 2-prong blade Vs. Vitamix 4-prong blade

Of course, while performance is vital to the overall Vitamix vs Blendtec battle, reliability and durability are also key factors.  When a company offers a strong warranty, it shows that they stand behind their product.  Not surprisingly, both Vitamix and Blendtec offer great warranties:

  • Both offer 7-year warranties for the blender base itself and the containers
  • These warranties cover normal wear and tear as well as manufacturer defects
  • Both offer 3-year warranty extensions for $75

Some of our readers have expressed concern over shipping charges with Blendtec’s warranty.  Our contact at Blendtec has confirmed that like Vitamix, Blendtec covers all standard shipping charges related to warranty service. The warranty considerations of the Vitamix vs Blendtec battle is a complete toss-up.  Both companies have worked hard to keep up with each other’s warranty service.  You can’t lose with either one here.

As with anything you buy, design is always going to boil down to personal preference assuming the two points of comparison are competently designed.  As shown in almost every Vitamix review and Blendtec review, both companies are extremely competent in their designs. It does bear mentioning that were this a Vitamix vs Blendtec battle from a few years ago, Blendtec would come out on top.  Blendtec has always produced blenders that are designed to fit right underneath any standard kitchen counter for storage and fit under overhanging cabinets while in use. Vitamix, on the other hand, just started making their models with shorter designs and wider bases.  The older models were taller and a bit harder to store. The Next Generation Vitamix models, like the Vitamix Professional Series, have switched from the taller style jar to the wide jar similar to the Blendtec jar.  We love how the new jars fit comfortably under counter tops.  With the older Vitamix models, we had to store the jars in a cabinet and pull the blender base out from the wall for smoothie sessions. Many people still prefer the taller, more narrow Vitamix jar.  My mom, for example, will never let go of her Vitamix 5200 because she loves the tall jar.  She feels the tall jar has a more accurate pour than the wide style jars. But know, it’s really all about what size and design type you prefer as both will do you justice in the kitchen. Blendtec vs Vita Mix jars

This is probably the most contentious category in the Vitamix vs Blendtec battle.  Both companies think completely different when it comes to controls and for many, this is the deciding factor.  Vitamix blenders are made with a simplicity is better concept for controls.   The dials are low tech and low maintenance, making them simple to understand and use.  The intuitive control system gives you exact control over the blending speed with a turn of the dial. Blendtec believes that higher-tech hardware and controls is the way to go.  If you like light-up touch pads, built-in presets and touch-button speed control, Blendtec is what you are looking for. If you like simplicity in control, tactile buttons and knobs, Vitamix is your blender. Once again, in the Vitamix vs Blendtec battle, this one comes down to personal preference.  Do you like simple or high-tech? Blendtec vs Vitamix controls

It’s rather hard to judge this category without going through each individual model separately, but suffice it to say that Vitamix offers the best value per feature when the two go head to head on similarly priced models.  Of course, both blenders are pricey, but with the longevity you get, the warranty guaranteeing it and the overall quality of the blender, it certainly is worth it in the long run. Vitamix sells reconditioned blenders at a significant discount.  They go out of stock almost as soon as they become available, however if you can get one of these popular deals, go for it.  I spent a month trying to snag a reconditioned professional series and never did find one in stock.  Below are the current prices of recondition Vitamix and Blendtec blenders and links to check current stock: (updated November 21, 2013)

Vitamix 5200 Standard Reconditioned – $299.00

After the Fact

Finally, we took a look at the intangibles that each blender provides.  In the past, this one was one area where Vitamix had the upper hand. Both Vitamix and Blendtec have invested heavily in being customer focused. This is a win for us, the consumers. Vitamix and Blendtec offer websites that are packed with information, recipes, nutrition guides and a host of content specific lists that are personally geared for every type of customer they have (i.e. vegans, raw food enthusiasts, elderly, etc.).  Plus, the recipe book that comes with Vitamix and Blendtec blenders are jammed packed with useful info and recipes.

The Final Decision

So, who really wins in the Vitamix vs Blendtec battle?  Well, it is hard to declare a winner.  Both companies offer an excellent product.  However, we’ll go ahead and give the slight advantage to Vitamix, just because we personally prefer it.  I grew up with a Vitamix in the home and am more familiar with the coampany. Still, that’s personal preference and not a reason to decide for yourself. The Blendtec is a great blender and it will thrive in any kitchen. Raspberry Detox Smoothie

raspberry detox smoothie

This is an excellent detox smoothie for a natural body cleanse. It’s packed with fruit, which is high in fiber and loaded with essential vitamins and minerals. Let’s take a look at some of the key detox ingredients.

Flaxseeds bring a big name benefit with “alpha-linolenic acid”, an omega-3 fatty acid that will boost heart health and help remove sugar from your bloodstream. Flax seed will also give you fiber and manganese. This recipe calls for ground flaxseeds. You can buy them ground, but I like them as fresh as possible. If you think you will use a lot of flaxseed, it’s worth getting a cheap coffee grinder.

These sweet berries are packed full of antioxidants and anti-inflammatory phytonutrients. Raspberries offer weight loss benefits, blood sugar benefits, and anti-cancer benefits. Those are some pretty sweet benefits!

When I think of lemons I think of sunshine, summer, and roadside lemonade stands. These tart, vitamin-cpower fruits are full of detox rich flavonoids. Would you like natural antibiotics? How about anti-carcinogens? Protection from rheumatoid arthritis? All of this and more can be found in our friend, the lemon.

Let me just say, I feel so smart when I drink this smoothie. It tastes great and it has so many health benefits. Give it a try and let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

Vitamix 5200 Standard Review

Are you looking for an affordable way to get healthier, fresher ingredients into your diet?  If so, the Vitamix 5200 Blender is an item that you’re definitely going to want to consider purchasing.  Over the course of this Vitamix 5200 review, I’m going to share with you exactly why the Vitamix 5200 Blender is worth every single penny—I should know as it’s the only blender sitting on my kitchen counter right now.

Let me tell you why in my own personal Vitamix 5200 review.

The Vitamix 5200 Reviews Sold Me—And I couldn’t Have Been Happier

Out of all the Vitamix blender reviews I came across during my search for the perfect blender, the Vitamix 5200 stood out as the best for my kitchen because of three things:

  • Its Power
  • Its Versatility
  • Its Simplicity

These were the three main features I was looking for in a blender.  I needed a unit that could not only handle the various shakes, smoothies, soups and recipes I made, but was also powerful enough to work with the larger ingredients equally as well as the more delicate produce I was using and that was extremely simple to use.

I thought this would be a pretty tall order to fill, but when I saw the features of the Vitamix, I knew this was a blender I had to try.

Blending Innovation in Design

Rather than just linking you to the Vitamix 5200 reviews that I found prior to purchasing the unit, I figured it’d be better if I gave you a more hands on account based on my personal experiences with the blender.

For starters, the thing about the Vitamix 5200 Blender that really stood out to me was the efficient use of the motor’s lower horsepower combined with the sharp four-blade assembly.  When I compared this with Blendtec’s similarly priced and featured model, I found that the Vitamix 5200 Blender used only a two-peak horsepower, 11.5 amp motor.

This was more than enough power to pulverize my toughest produce into smooth, refreshing shakes and smoothies thanks to the extra-efficient blade, but it was also low enough not to thrash my delicate ingredients into a tasteless, pulpy mess.  From tough pineapple cores to kale to mango fruits and kiwi—this was the perfect balance of power and finesse all wrapped up into one unit.  In essence, the Vitamix 5200 had the exact versatility that I was looking for thanks to its innovative and superior design.

Versatility in Pitcher Size

On top of all that, the Vitamix 5200 Blender came with a BPA-free (something that was personally very important to me) 64-ounce pitcher.  It’s large enough to hold excess quantities so is perfect for someone like me who is always on the go.  This big pitcher size allows you to make large batches of smoothies at once, freezing the leftovers for the next day.  I soon found myself saving tons of money on produce by mixing all my smoothies for the week on Sunday, simply refrigerating and freezing my weekly portions accordingly.

For those of you who need more storage or counter space (with the 64-ounce pitcher, the unit stands 20 inches tall), the Vitamix 5200 Review I originally read mentioned that 32- and 48-ounce compact pitchers were available for sale separetly, although I personally never used them.  When I sat down to write this Vitamix 5200 Review, I found out that now you can order your Vitamix blenders with whichever size pitcher you’d like—yet another testimony to their commitment to versatility.

The Vitamix 5200 is Simplicity Squared

Finally, it was the simplicity of the dials and controls on the Vitamix 5200 Blender that really sealed the deal for me.  If you look through other Vitamix blender reviews, you’ll notice that this isn’t a trait that’s unique to the 5200—Vitamix takes a simplistic approach to their dial and control system as a whole.

By providing a simple interface that allows you to call up your variable speeds with the twist of the dial, changing speeds as easy as turning the unit on with the flick of a switch—you’ll always get the exact speed and results you want.  It’s a throwback to the classic days of blending, so as long as you understand 1 is slower than 10, you’ll quickly adjust to the reliability of a simple system that works—why reinvent the wheel?

The Famous Vitamix Tamper Tool and Warranty

Although it wasn’t on my  original list of three vital blender features, I’d be remiss if I left the tamper tool out of my Vitamix 5200 review.  The tamper tool allows you to push any ingredient you want directly down into the blender’s blades while the unit is running without endangering your safety.

This means you can make fruit sorbets, rich ice creams and nut butters with ease.  You’ll also find that your leafy green smoothies come out much better since you’ll constantly be applying the pressure that keeps them from getting caught up in the blades. Not only is this the safe way to blend, but it’s the fast and efficient way to blend.

All Vitamix blenders come standard with a 7-year warranty, and there is a 3-year extension that’s available for purchase separately.  This means that you can expect at least a decade of performance and reliability out of your Vitamix 5200 blender.

Vitamix 5200 Bottom Line—One of the Top  Blenders on the Market
